The mine is located in Zacatecas state, the historic heart of Mexican mining, where silver deposits have been exploited since colonial times. Such depth is due to the unique geological conditions of the Sierra Madre — here lie some of the world's richest polymetallic ores. For comparison, the deepest mine on the planet in Canada goes down to 2,350 m, but Mexican miners traditionally work at extreme depths, extracting silver, zinc, and lead.
