Historically, the cotton plantations of the American South and the textile mills of New England formed the backbone of the industry, but since the 1970s the sector has declined due to competition from Asian manufacturers. Today, American weaving operations survive only as small niche mills producing expensive designer fabrics, while the mass market has virtually disappeared.
