This tropical fruit requires a hot, humid climate, which is found only in a narrow coastal strip along the Red Sea, but even there soils are poor and saline. Instead of pineapples, Saudi farmers in the Asir region grow coffee and pomegranates, better adapted to the mountainous landscape. All domestic demand for pineapples is met by imports from the Philippines and Thailand. The country ranks 15-th out of 197 in production volume.
